Before Every Bike Outing
Every cyclist should make a habit of preparing for a ride by going through the ABCs.
A = Air. Tire pressure ratings are noted on the sidewall of the tire. Inflate to the recommended pressure.
B = Brakes. Check brake pads for wear and brake cables for fraying. Brake pads should not rub the tire. Your brakes are too loose when there is less than an inch between the handlebar and brake lever when you apply it.
C = Crankset. Your cranks are the arms that attach the pedals to your bike. Take both cranks in hand and try to move them sideways. If either moves, tighten the bolt holding it on. If both move, bring your bike to Shepherd & Schaller for repair. Of course, a helmet is recommended, lights and reflective gear should be used in darkness or low light conditions, and you should know the rules and conditions of the road or trail. Bring along a tire pump and spare tube and you’ll be well prepared! Practice the following basic rules for safety:
- 1. Ride on the right
- 2. Be predictable. Avoid sudden swerves and stops
- 3. Be visible. Wear bright, reflective clothing. Use lights and reflectors
- 4. Follow and obey signs, signals and movement markings
- 5. Signal when you are turning or stopping
- 6. Position yourself appropriately. On wide roads ride 3-4 feet to the right of cars. On narrow roads ride just inside the traffic lane
- 7. Ride defensively and respectfully. Watch for people who may not be looking for you and be courteous to other users of the road or trail
- 8. Yield to pedestrians
Remember — Always wear a helmet!
