NAME: Robb Shepherd

FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Back country nordic skiing, alpine skiing (when I get the chance), fishing, hunting, just being outdoors.

FAVORITE GEAR: Kuhl Clothing, Volkl Skis, Marker Bindings, Salomon Boots and Skis (Nordic and Alpine), Smartwool Sweaters, Socks, Patagonia Down sweaters... did I mention Kuhl Clothing? (I love all of it!)

FAVORITE CATEGORY TO HELP CUSTOMERS WITH: Helping a family with either Nordic or Alpine skis, especially parents with young/growing Children and explaining our Dungeon Sale program( a great alternative to trade-ins).

BEST OUTDOOR MEMORY: So many, where do I start? In the beginning: spending countless hours in my Thompson Wood boat with 1957 Johnson 3.5 motor on our lake up north with my Labrador retriever fishing and exploring. (This was when I was 7-10 years old!) That boat is currently on display in the shop above the check out counters. Now, on the same lake spending time with my family, boating, fishing, waterskiing, kayaking, and relaxing.

IDEAL SATURDAY: Spending the day on the lake, or in the woods with family or friends and, of course, a Labrador at my side.

I COULD EAT _____ FOREVER: Briq’s ice cream… who am I kidding, any ice cream!!

PLACE I’D MOST LIKE TO VISIT: Normandy France, I’d love to see where Shep landed in Normandy on D-day plus 2.

INSPIRED BY: Stan Schaller and Allen “Shep” Shepherd and their legacy I’m trying to live up to. Steve Lindvall, my mentor. My staff; their energy is contagious!

PERSONAL FACTOID: As I said I’m an 80’s guy, I like the music, I graduated High school in ’81 and College in ’85. Also, I looked for many years and found my dream bike in Decorah, Iowa! A mint Honda 1986 Magna V65 1100! Scary fast, but so fun!!

IF I COULD LEARN A NEW SKILL/HOBBY, IT’D BE: Gardening. I'd grow vegetables and a flower cutting garden so I could fill the house and store with fresh flowers. I've never had the time or place to really try. I want to learn Spanish too.

I COULD EAT _____ FOREVER:  La Prima's chocolate chip cookies, any kind of fresh pasta

INSPIRED BY: Carol Robinson, Terre Lindvall and other generous people who smile and say little while making huge sacrifices every day.

BEST TRIP I’VE EVER BEEN ON: A wonderful week with family and friends exploring the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I had no idea how inspiring the climate and environment could be. It's no wonder residents there are so active and fit - there's absolutely no reason to ever stay indoors.

WHAT I DID BEFORE SHEPHERD & SCHALLER: Marketing, merchandising and advertising for a respected manufacturer and ad agency. I find commonalities in every role I've undertaken, and every experience lends itself to the next in some way or another. FAVORITE QUOTE: "In fact, the only man who truly thinks is the one who, when faced with a problem, instead of looking only straight ahead, toward what habit, tradition, the commonplace, and mental inertia would make one assume, keeps himself alert, ready to accept the fact that the solution might spring from the least foreseeable spot on the great rotundity of the horizon."    -Jose Ortega y Gasset

History of Shepherd & Schaller Sporting Goods

Arriving in Wausau not long after WWII, Allen Shepherd & Stanley Schaller decided quickly that Central Wisconsin needed a sports shop. They made a plan and put their name on it. Literally.
The first store, in 1949, was only a few hundred square feet. You could call it a “tiny box store.” But it was big enough for Allen Shepherd & Stan Schaller to stock what folks in the area wanted for hunting, fishing, camping, skiing, diving, bowling, athletics and all their favorite recreational pursuits. A new location up the block a few years later let them expand their offering as customer expectations grew. They had grown to become a “small box” store.
Shep’s (as the locals know us) has always been about relationships. Shep and Stan knew their customers by name and their manufacturers too. They rolled up their sleeves and served the community and the industry. In no time at all, the airmen were making their mark on the local, regional and national landscape, leading the local Rotary Club, chairing the Wisconsin Merchants Federation, and directing the National Sporting Goods Association, to name a few.
Jump ahead more than 60 years and only a few things have changed. Shep’s has refined our product mix to specialize in Outdoor products for skiers and snowboarders, paddlers and cyclists, water sports lovers, disc golfers and trend setters who follow fashion hand-in-hand with function. Repairs and rentals get a lot of attention, as well as custom orders. We’re still locally owned and family operated and as always, our team is made of enthusiastic experts who play as hard as they work. We still supporting local teams and organizations, and partner with people who get things done for the communities they serve, like Nations Best Sports, so we can bring you big-box prices with mom-and-pop service.
Call or click. Any way you choose to contact us, we promise to give the same attention to detail and down-home customer service that you can expect when you visit us at our Wausau, Wisconsin small-box store.
